Monthly Programs / Presentations are jointly sponsored by Kinnikinnick
Native Plant Society Near-term presentations are announced on the main website page.
On February 27 the Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society will feature a panel presentation on “Native Plant Community Demonstration Gardens: Two Practical Examples”. Carol Jenkins, Clare Marley, John Hastings, Gail Bolin and Molly McCahon will take an in depth look at two exciting projects, Dover Bay and the County Admin Building. Beginning at 9:45am this presentation will take place at the Sandpoint Community Hall and is co-sponsored by the City of Sandpoint Park and Recreation Department. The native plant demonstration garden at the County Administrative Building was a collaborative effort by the county, local nurseries, Native Plant Society, Sandpoint High School, Boy Scouts, employee association and local professionals to show case the beauty and practical applications of our native plants. The demonstration garden was a result of the county’s new codes for waterfront vegetative buffer and the “Grow Native” program to plant native species. The garden is located at the west entrance to the County Admin Building, and continues to be a work in progress, as plants grow and the site develops. In Dover, a lakeshore revegitation project
adjacent to the City Hall began as Gail Bolin’s Master’s thesis and grew into a
community project. The objective was to create a visual display in order to
enhance the appreciation, knowledge, and conservation of northern Idaho’s native
plants, and to encourage landowners to utilize native plants in their
landscapes, particularly riparian areas. Dover was also a collaborative effort, and those involved were: Molly McCahon, Lake*A*Syst Coordinator, Sandpoint High School instructor John Hastings and his horticulture students and several volunteers from the Native Plant Society.
